Powell county man bitten by venomous South American snake Updated: Sat 5:26 PM, Jan 31, 2015 By: Mike Linden POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - What started as a routine Friday at the Kentucky Reptile Zoo quickly turned life-threatening for Director Jim Harrison. Harrison was extracting venom from a South American rattlesnake when a restraining tube broke. The snake then bit Harrison on the wrist. "This snake is probably three and a half feet long," Kentucky Reptile Zoo curator Kristen Wiley said. "It's not a huge snake but this particular species of rattlesnake is well known for being highly neurotoxic." Wiley says if it weren't for the quick decisions of the zoo staff, the neurotoxic venom of the snake could have killed Harrison in nearly 30 minutes.
