I have been camping in the Gorge since 1979. Because Washington cant work like all our households work, budget what we can spend based on what we have, we the people WHO ACTUALLY OWN THE LAND, cannot use it as it was intended? NOT! I know about covert camping and I guess I'll have to practice those skills next weekend. Oh and Mr. Barry Sabato (alias: Barrack Huessen O' BAM BAM) WILL learn he does not always get what he wants, WE THE PEOPLE GET WHAT WE WANT...FREEDOM FROM TYRANNY! I think its time for some impeachment hearings with a side of Trial for Treason to set things straight. Guess some people didnt listen when he said 'We are 5 days away from FUNDAMENTALLY TRANSFORMING AMERICA'... welcome to his version of Amerika.

Another way to look at it: 90% of OUR Daniel Boone National Forest is still open 24/7. It's the Red River Gorge that is closed for 8 hours out of a 24 hour day and they are doing everything they can to keep it open during 6am-10pm...jumping through every possible loophole they can find. They have not cut off climbing, backcountry hiking, trail hiking, canoeing, fishing, cycling, horseback riding, hunting, picnicking...they have only cut off camping. Visitors are still able to hike all day long and come back to the many private campgrounds/hotels/cabins in the area...which is what the majority do anyway. Many of the Forest Service Crew are still working through this time to keep us informed that might arise...even though they are not getting paid. If you do go camping, possibly go in an area of the DBNF that is still open 24 hours? The DBNF is over 708,000 acres and the RRG only takes up 13,379 of those acres. BTW, the gates may be closed, but access to the areas is still open. A person can get out of their car still and hike to any of these areas. Chimney Top is accessible from the swinging bridge in less than a mile. Sky Bridge is an additional 3/4 mile hike on blacktop. If they can't make the hike, both are can be viewed from 715.

Red River Gorge Campers Flock To Private Campground Amidst Shutdown Posted: Oct 6, 2013 11:07 PM As the US government shutdown continues, people who went camping in the Red River Gorge in the past few days say government workers told them to leave. "It's kind of turned into like a refugee camp type deal where people are coming out here. They have nowhere to camp, so we're giving them a place to camp," says Ernie Braden with Red River Adventure. Signs blocking off roadways in the Red River Gorge are sending campers like newlyweds Darrell and Janet Baker to the one campground that is still open. "We were at Indian Creek. We had a whole group there, and they came and told us we had to get out, so we had to find somewhere to move the group for the wedding the day of the wedding," says Darrell Baker. After moving their guests, the couple was married Thursday at Red River Adventure. "The wedding went off without a problem. Where we got married was not really that big of an issue--the fact that we were getting married--but we wished we could have done it back at Indian Creek. That's where I wanted it to be at," says Janet Baker. Braden says the campground is now double its capacity with close to 300 campers. The campground is busier than usual, but he's not complaining. "Well for us it's not really a problem. It's making us money, but however this isn't something that we want to make money off of either, you know. We'd rather have the government get their act together and get out there and take care of the situation," says Braden. www.lex18.com/news/red-river-gorge-campers-flock-to-private-campground-amidst-shutdown/

Federal Government Shutdown Forces Campers in Red River Gorge to Evacuate People who went camping in the Red River Gorge in the past few days say government workers told them to leave. Members of a wedding party say firefighters even forced them out on the day the bride and groom had planned to wed. LEX 18 News reporter Ivory Hecker has the story from a privately owned campground where many of those campers have moved. NOTE: Video includes RRS Member Pam RussellPam Russell

Roads were closed and backcountry camping was prohibited this weekend (Oct. 2013) at the Red River Gorge Geological Area in the Daniel Boone National Forest. 'Due to the lapse in agency funding, the sale of all types of permits (i.e., recreation, firewood, forest products, mineral materials for example) are suspended, recreation.gov reservations are suspended, and all federally owned recreation sites are closed. All offices are closed. These services will be available once funding is restored.' Photos: www.flickr.com/photos/shannon_tompkins/10132676133/in/photolist-groBAD-grmMDP/

Coming down for the weekend for a day hike; not staying overnight. Can we still get in to hike? Is there anywhere open to park? Thanks!

During the day you may walk in anywhere you wish. Park near the Gates if that is where you are going just don't block in other vehicles. Try to leave the area before 10:00pm.

Would like to hike auxier ridge and courthouse rock next week. Is the entire tunnel ridge road closed? If so, how can I get around this limitation? Do I just need to hike the entire tunnel ridge road? Or park near nada tunnel and hike from there?

Forest Service Road #39 is closed. Approaching that direction you would walk the entire length of the gravel road (a few miles). Upon reaching the Auxier Ridge Parking Area then your hike would begin.
