Search called off at the Red River Gorge
Updated: Fri 6:36 PM, Jul 04, 2014
WOLFE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT)- Search crews combed the Red River Gorge Friday morning in search of a missing person. The search began in Wolfe County Thursday evening, after several hikers reported hearing yells for help, but didn't see anyone.
Crews searched the Bison Way Trail Head area until about 2 a.m. Friday, but did not find anyone. They did find a vehicle in a nearby parking lot, but no sign of the driver.
The search resumed around 10:00am Friday, but was called off around 1:30pm Friday when nobody was found. The vehicle spotted Thursday night was also gone when search crews returned to check it out Friday afternoon.
"Without any leads and without any evidence that he's actually in the area, there's nothing really left to do but wait, wait and see if anyone is reported missing and go from there," said Drew Stevens with Wolfe County Search and Rescue.
Search and rescue officials say they'll return to the area if someone is reported missing.

Crews Search The Gorge After Screams Reported
Crews from several counties are searching the Red River Gorge trying to find a person who campers say they heard screaming for help Thursday night.
What makes their search so difficult is that crews don't know exactly who they are looking for and where exactly in the Gorge that person could be. Still, they call this "credible" and they believe someone needs help.
The search of the Gorge began Thursday night, but for safety reasons it was suspended and it picked back up Friday morning in the area of Bison Way Trail Head.
According to Wolfe County Search and Rescue, a group of campers at Indian Staircase called 911 Thursday night saying they heard a man screaming for help. It went on for about an hour, but by the time search crews arrived, the screams had stopped.
A woman on the opposite side of Indian Staircase said she heard the same screams. The acoustics, Search and Rescue says, make it tough to pinpoint where exactly the cries for help could've come from.
"Several times they said they heard "help, help, help." And as it went on for an hour, the sound started to dissipate a little bit, and they thought they heard someone say SOS. And they were pretty sure it was a male voice they heard," said Tiffany Conway with Menifee County Search And Rescue.
Search and Rescue crews ask anyone planning to hike in the area of Indian Staircase or Bison Head to pick an alternate area as they continue this search.
