RED RIVER GORGE, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) Rescue crews have reached three hikers who went missing in the Red River Gorge on Tuesday night. Menifee County Emergency Management says the hikers are all in their 20s. The group was on the Bison Way Trail, near the Gladie Historic Site, on the Menifee-Wolfe County Line. The hikers lost their way when the sun set. One of them was injured after falling about 15 feet. Officials say rescue crews and the hikers made it out of the woods around 6:30 Wednesday morning. The hiker who was injured in a fall was flown to UK Hospital for treatment. www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/Rescuers-search-for-three-missing-hikers-in-Red-River-Gorge-236349081.html

MENIFEE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Menifee County Search and Rescue were out at the Red River Gorge early Friday morning after a sheriff's deputy reported an abandoned vehicle. At around 5am Friday morning a Menifee County Sheriff's deputy was patrolling the Suspension Bridge parking lot near Sheltowee Trace Trail when he spotted what he thought was an abandoned vehicle with the back doors wide open. The deputy called in for search and rescue who tell WKYT that they dispatched for a 'hasty search' at daylight to try and locate the owner of the vehicle. Not far from the parking lot officials located a small campsite near the river where the vehicles owner and occupants were camping. When questioned by officials it was determined that the owners had not locked their doors and they believed someone had broken into the vehicle, leaving the doors open. www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/Search-crews-called-to-Red-River-Gorge-232992751.html

WOLFE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A chilly night for a couple of hikers who had to be rescued after they got lost in the Red River Gorge. The hikers, according to the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team, lost their way as it began to get dark and were not prepared for the chilly overnight temperatures. Crews were able to ping their cellphone and found the hikers at the junction of Sheltowee and Lost Branch Trail, leading them to safety. No injuries are reported. www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/Hikers-rescued-in-Red-River-Gorge-230476221.html

Group To Protest Red River Gorge Road Closures Posted Friday, October 11th 2013 @ 4pm RED RIVER GORGE, Ky. -- An eastern Kentucky group is taking their issues with the Government shutdown to the streets. A sit-in is set for Saturday outside of the gates of a U.S. Forrest Service road through the gorge that has been closed as a result of the government shutdown. The group Friends of the Red River Gorge says the roads are closed despite the rangers still being on the job. Area businesses depend on the tourist dollars that come in during the fall season and say if the roads don't reopen soon, there could hard times for the surrounding communities. During the day you may walk in anywhere you wish. Park near the Gates if that is where you are going just don't block in other vehicles. Try to leave the area before 10:00pm.

Jim Harrison’s hands – mangled by 30 years worth of snake bites – tell one-of-a-kind story By Roger Auge II KyForward correspondent What remains of the normal lengths of the 10 fingers on Jim Harrison’s hands tells a chapter of his one-of-a-kind life’s story. “Except this one,” he says, pointing to a right forefinger shortened to the second joint. “That was from a defective weight machine when I was kickboxing.” All others were from the results of snake bites during thousands and thousands of venom extractions from serious snakes such as cottonmouths, rattlers and copperheads at the Kentucky Reptile Zoo near Slade in the Red River Gorge area. Theaters and Drive-ins are making the move to Digital Projectors, cost between $50 - 75,000.00 each. The Motion Picture Industry is moving to this digital standard instead of film thus all viewing outlets must make this mandatory change in order to survive. What are the plans for Red River Gorge's historic Mt View Drive-in? We do not know . . .
