I'm taking my son on his first trip to the gorge next week and was wondering if I could get some suggestions for a good trip? I would like to visit at least the D Boone hut just for the history lesson he would get from that. Not a necessity but just like for him to see it. Maybe any good camping spots along the Rough Trail? Would like to make it around a 10 mile trip. Any help or suggestions would be great. TIA

The D Boone Hut can be part of the larger Auxier Ridge Loop which is fantastic to experience taking in views of Raven Rock, Haystack, Courthouse and Double Arch. Be aware the only history connected to D Boone Hut is the fact that two hunters faked D Boone's initials many years back. However the history of Rock Shelter use by native Americans is fact. Can't go wrong starting anyone exploring the RRG off in this area.

Ha I didn't know that about the D Boone hut. I thought it was where he hid out from the Indians and made gunpowder lol. Thanks for the trail suggestion. That may be the route we plan to take. Any recommendations for a good camp spot along that route? I'd love to be able to keep a fire going for a couple hrs. Maybe a spot with an abundance of downed wood? One of my favorite things ever to do is chat with my son over a camp fire. Thanks for the help.

This can be a little tough as you must get 300 feet from any established trail. It's hard to do along Auxier, in fact impossible, but as the loop runs along the streamline you can branch out from there to get far enough away to satisfy the USFS. Merry Christmas to you and your family from the RRS & RRGtoday.com!
