Man Falls To His Death At The Red River Gorge
A Cincinnati man is dead after falling off one of the most dangerous cliffs at the Red River Gorge overnight.
just after midnight, the Wolfe County Search and Rescue team got the call that a camper on Chimney Top Rock was in some serious danger.
"He was reported to be with friends who said that he crossed the barrier, and then lost his footing. He tried to prevent himself from falling by grabbing onto a tree growing onto the rock and then disappearing into a crevice, for which Chimney Top is famous," said David Fifer from the search and rescue team.
In those moments, the team says they had no idea whether the man was alive or dead.
"We operated under the assumption that he was alive and injured and needed immediate care so that dictated our decision to repel into that crack in the darkness," said Fifer.
Fifer says this particular area on Chimney Top Rock is one of the hardest spots to work in the gorge, especially in the dark. He says although the gorge is filled with warning signs about the dangerous cliffs, it's still one of the most popular places for people to visit and often spend the night.
"While we were responding to the rescue we passed numerous campfires and could hear voices from campsites all around chimney top. Chimney top is not a place I would go in the middle of the night, said Fifer.
The Wolfe County deputy coroner says the Cincinnati man was on an annual camping trip in the gorge with a group of friends. He has not been identified.
