POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A woman was killed and her husband was seriously injured early Friday after a tree limb fell on their tent near the Natural Bridge State Park.
Hours of heavy rain in Powell County sent flood waters spilling into a campground at Natural Bridge State Resort Park, forcing park rangers to evacuate low-lying areas.
The coroner told WKYT that strong wind and hail toppled a tree limb 3:20 a.m. The limb killed Catherine Carlson, 45, who was camping with her husband and children. Their three children weren't hurt. The oldest child is 14.
A camper at a neighboring campsite called 911 and dispatchers were able to find the family using that call.
"He was able to triangulate his location by using his cellphone, with that cellphone he was able to determine which road he was on," said Corey Graham, the dispatch director for Powell County.
Carlson's husband, Brian Carlson, was taken to Clark Regional Medical Center and then rushed to UK Hospital to be treated for a fractured pelvis. Hospital officials told WKYT that he is in critical condition.
"It's horrible that something like that happens," said camper Joey Tackett. "This makes you thankful for every day of life. You never know when it can be taken away. That's awful."
Tackett and other campers in the Middle Fork campground started worrying about their own safety as a creek flooded the area, leading park rangers to evacuate the campground.
The flood waters quickly washed away the scene where Carlson died, according to the coroner.
"It's horrible to even think something like this could happen. Come here to have a good time and something like this happens, it breaks your heart," said Tackett.
State park officials say the flooding from Friday's storm is worse than anything they've seen in the past few years.
High waters have closed Middle Fork campground and Hoedown Island.
