Goshen man dead after fall at Red River Gorge
Man crossed over railing at Chimney Rock prior to falling, authorities say
UPDATED 12:17 AM EDT Oct 12, 2015
GOSHEN, Ohio —A southwest Ohio man has died after falling off of Chimney Top Rock at the Red River Gorge.
Authorities said Michael Hacker, 30, of Goshen, died in the fall.
According to the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team, the team was dispatched Saturday at about 11 p.m. after a report of a man falling from the overlook after crossing the railing.
Search and Rescue crews said Hacker’s friend approached a nurse, who was camping below Chimney Rock, and asked her to call 911.
“She was approached by an individual saying you need to call 911 my friend just fell,” Eddie Conner, with the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team, said. “She made the call, they got their maps out and navigated their way around quite a distance to get to the bottom of the cliff and they found him and he was deceased.”
Officials said the nurse was able to confirm the death prior to search and rescue crews arriving on the scene.
"If there are warning signs, heed them. They are there for a reason and if there are railings and barricades, stay on the right side because the wrong side could end tragically," said Conner.
More than 18 volunteers from the Wolfe, Powell and Menifee counties search and rescue teams hiked down the difficult terrain to get the victim's body.
Rescuers said the recovery has been emotionally tough—especially since earlier last week they rescued two boys who had missing for more than 20 hours.
"It's very devastating after the happy ending we had Friday with the two boys at Koomer Ridge and then you go to something this devastating. It really has an impact on the rescuers," said Conner.
Officials said counselors will be available for rescue workers through the Daniel Boone National Forest.
