Search for missing Richmond man suspended
Posted: Tuesday, August 11, 2015 9:22 pm
By Machaela Ballard / Register News Writer
Unless new leads are received, the search has been suspended for a missing Richmond man who ran from his caretakers and into the Red River Gorge woods last Saturday, Aug. 1.
Josh Adkins Risner, 31, suffers from a mental illness and was last seen around 8:30 p.m. at the Koomer Ridge Campground, said John May, training officer for the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team.
He was wearing a blue shirt, khaki shorts and blue and white tennis shoes, May added.
“I hate to say we are in our final efforts, but we are no longer actively searching,” May explained. “It’s still an open case and if anything develops we will certainly go back out there again. But unless something comes up, we have pretty well exhausted all that we can do at this point.”
In the nine days since Risner disappeared, more than 100 rescuers have been scouring difficult terrain for leads, May said, but nothing has been discovered.
The last day of searching was Saturday, when more than 135 rescuers flocked to the Gorge. The team utilized 16 — cadaver and scent — dogs and two drones in wooded areas. They also stood at all major intersections and handed out fliers to Gorge visitors, May said.
“We found a few things but they all turned out not to be in relation to him. We don’t know if he is in the Gorge or not in the Gorge. The family still believes he may be there, but this far into it there has been no sign of him,” May explained.
Risner did not have a cell phone and it is unknown how much money he might have had on his person. Regardless, he could have “hitched a ride,” May added.
“We have to assume he is still in the Gorge somewhere, but the reality is that we just don’t know,” May said.

Large Search Party Scours Red River Gorge For Missing Man

Updated: Aug 08, 2015 7:34 PM EST
A large search party went back out at the Red River Gorge Saturday, looking for a Madison County man who disappeared a week ago during a camping trip.
About 135 people were searching for Josh Adkins all day Saturday. Emergency Management officials say they exhausted their resources with one of the biggest search teams they've gathered as they continue to hunt for the missing 31-year-old.
"We're roughly expanding from five to ten miles in this area," said Incident Commander Mike Sparks. Sparks adds that several searchers have sprained their ankles or suffered other minor injuries in the rough terrain.
The search is through massive area of woods and cliffs. About 25 agencies are searching for Adkins, including 15 cadaver dogs and a drone team.
"Flying hard to reach areas to try to identify anything out of the ordinary. We're looking for clothing--anything that shouldn't be in the woods. We're trying to identify those things by taking high resolution video and pictures," said drone operator Randy Catlette.
As crews scour the woods in Wolfe County and Powell County, Adkins's family was at Koomer Ridge Campground where Adkins was last seen before disappearing into the woods. They're anxiously hoping he'll find his way back to the campsite.
"It's just the place is huge, but this many days in, you would think that we would have ran across something," said Adkins cousin Lisa Hoskins.
They're urging everyone in the gorge area to keep an eye out for Adkins.
"If you're out here hiking and enjoying the beautiful place, if you notice something that looks odd or off, please call 911," said Hoskins.
Sparks says after a week of searching, they have suspended their efforts until further clues come up.

Wolfe County Search & Rescue team searching for missing Richmond man
Updated: Mon 2:22 PM, Aug 03, 2015
WOLFE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) -- A member of the Wolfe County Search & Rescue team was injured Sunday afternoon while conducting a search for a missing man.
Team members along with four other agencies are currently searching for the man around the Koomer Ridge Campground area.
Kentucky State Police are also on the scene assisting.
They say Josh Adkins Risner of Richmond, who suffers from mental illness, ran away from the campground around 8:30 Saturday night. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, khaki shorts with blue and white Nike shoes.
Adkins has been placed into the missing persons database. The terrain makes the job of the search crews more difficult.
"There's a lot of high walls, cliffs, of course the foliage is extremely dense at the bottom. I talked to one of the searchers a minute ago, they said they were having a lot of trouble seeing the ground because the foliage is so high up, it's over knee high in some places and probably over their head in others," said Sgt. Jeff Crase with Kentucky State Police.
One Wolfe County Search & Rescue team member is being treated for a broken or badly sprained ankle after he jumped from a high tree.
Wolfe County Search & Rescue, Morgan County Search & Rescue, Menifee County Search & Rescue and Knott County Search & Rescue are all assisting with this search.
Crews plan on searching throughout the night.

Crews Searching Red River Gorge For Missing Man
Crews were out all day Sunday and overnight searching for a Richmond man, last seen camping in the Red River Gorge in Wolfe County.
Crews have been intensely searching certain parts of the area, even using a drone to search the cliff line. They're scouring the area around the Koomer Branch campground, searching for 31-year-old Josh Adkins.
Adkins walked away from his family while camping there Saturday evening around 8:30 a.m. When his family had not seen any sign of him by 10 a.m. the next day, volunteers with the Wolfe County Search and Rescue squad were called in to help. Crews from at least four other counties spent the day searching the woods around the campsite on foot, and with k-9 units.
Adkins suffers from a mental disability.
"I'm being told that as we talk right now there's multiple independent counties being brought in right now for refreshment so to speak because these people have been searching all day long and it's gonna go pretty much throughout tonight ." KSP trooper Jeff Crase told LEX 18's Jennifer McGraw.
Adkins was last seen wearing a blue shirt, khaki shorts, and white Nike tennis shoes. As of Monday the search has been expanded five miles. More agencies will be reporting within the hour and as of now 100 rescuers are looking for the missing man.
